Hello from Ahmedabad!
I have been here for about a week now. I'm just enamored with everything and everyone here. It was neat to be part of the welcome back celebrations for the children coming back from their Diwali vacation. I have been able to observe the teachers at the Kiran Center along with the other centers. I've been quite impressed with Manav Gulzar's English teacher. The students were learning about past, present, and future verb tenses. Along with the students, the teachers are enthusiastic to learn and become better teachers. I have learned a great deal from them and from the students already.
I'm excited to help to develop the English curriculum with Manav Sadhna’s education committee. The teachers seem receptive to new classroom management ideas too. As we develop the curriculum, I’ll be teaching English (and eventually math) to the 4th, 5th, and two 6th standard students at the Kiran Center. I was happy to see that they have a curriculum map for math.
I'm growing to like the vegetarian lifestyle and wearing traditional Indian Kurtis. I've been enjoying my morning walks along the Sabramati River as the fiery red sun rises. Manav Sadhna is doing so much good here. They truly do live up to their mission, "love all, serve all." What has really captured my attention are the chants they say during their daily prayer and meditation to represent the seven main religions. To me this is unity in diversity at its finest. There is so much to take in and experience here.
